• International Women's Day: History
In Canada, International Women’s Day, like in the rest of the Western World, falls on March 8th and is an occasion for us to celebrate women, raise a glass to their achievements or share a moment with our mother, sister, daughters, best friends or those individuals that have, perhaps, inspired us during the last year.
International Women’s Day is a unique time of year, a time to look back on those happy or even painful times, the times of empowerment, not just through the work of female leaders or feminist activists who push for gender equality every day, but also because of those small success stories that continue to underpin the notions of equality, women’s rights, equal pay and all other aspects of our everyday life which, more often than not, go unnoticed by the world.
International Womens Day, celebrated throughout history, from as far back as supposedly 1907, is a special Holiday that aims to support women, their professional successes, their health, wellness and their work within the community. From Fashion Industry specialists to Business Leaders and everything in between, gone are the days of so-called girl power. Women have, undoubtedly, carved out their own place in the world, so why not dedicate a day to their extraordinary accomplishments?

The early 1900s witnessed a rapid increase in population growth. This event, coupled with new ways of thinking, gave rise to radical ideologies and discussions, not least amongst women, regarding better pay and women’s suffrage. This time of social unrest and critical debate, eventually triggered more vocal campaigns for change. Women’s right to vote in Canada began in 1916 with full suffrage being granted in 1918, although it wasn’t until 1924 that this was extended to Asian and non-indigenous women.
The first International Women’s Day took place on March 19, 1911, in 4 European Countries (Austria, Switzerland, Germany and Denmark) with over 1 million people, both male and female, attending public events to honour the day and show their support. The desire to recognize and celebrate the dignity and economic, cultural and political achievements of women, steadily began to spread throughout other countries and, in 1975, the United Nations officially designated 8th of March International Women's Day.
